Closer to Nowhere by Ellen Hopkins

Prepare for a crying book: TW: death of a parent (prior to book starting), past drug use of a parent, family guardianship, alcoholism, child abuse (verbal and physical), homelessness, school shootings/violence

This book gave me all the feels, I didn’t know much going in except for that someone I trusted had recommended and it was MG so I could include my kids. They loved the formatting of it, the way that each character had a distinct voice and type of chapter, and it’s nice to get them interested in a contemporary when they normally prefer SFF/horror or animal protagonists. I was not prepared for just how intensely sad it made me and how triggering it was. Really well written and interesting though, and I’d recommend it if you’re in a good headspace for it.
