I went into this one with very little information. The only info I has was “it’s my favorite!” From @audris_book_life. I was thrown through a loop when I realized that this book was a period piece which makes the tension all the sweeter (touching being forbidden and all).
I really enjoyed Tristan’s character a lot. He has every reason to beat himself up and feel sorry for himself. Instead, Tristan chooses to channel his rage into productivity. His violence (🥵) and manipulation in the story is awe inspiring.
I like our female MC but I didn’t connect much with her. I did love her desire to protect the little guy, especially when it came to Simon. He relationship with the palace staff is really caring and beautiful. I loved how McIntire included an LGBTQ couple as most historical pieces don’t talk about their existence.
All in all, a wonderful continuation of the Never After series! I still am partial to Hook, but I very much enjoyed Scarred and it’s nod towards The Lion King. Be prepared.
Graphic: Violence, Blood, Body horror, Fire/Fire injury, and Gore
