Coraline by Neil Gaiman
5.0
This just further seals it for me, that I am a Neil Gaiman fan and I need to read more of his books.
I absolutely enjoyed this book. The spooky atmosphere, the message behind the book, Gaiman's whimsical writing style to set the mood. This was definitely different than the movie, the movie added quite a bit that wasn't in the book. This is one of those moments where I like the movie for what it is, and I like the book for what it is. There's no 'the book is better' here.
I adored the cat in this, Gaiman truly did capture the essence of a cat. I adored the majority of the characters in this actually. They all had their quirks, though Coraline's parents were pretty cardboard compared to the other characters. Probably because they felt very aloof and neglectful in the eyes of Coraline, not often there or often shooing her away to bother other people. But I won't fault Gaiman for that, it's them as parents and characters. Besides, you kinda needed the parents to be this way to put Coraline in the predicament she found herself in.
I could see myself rereading this book at some point, just to get back into the world of Coraline. Now to go explore more Gaiman books!
