We Hunt the Flame
by Hafsah Faizal
In this Middle Eastern-inspired YA fantasy, we follow Zafira - who uses her ability to traverse a cursed forest to disguise herself as the famed Hunter to feed her community - and Nasir - the crown prince trained to be one of a feared order of assassins and known as the Prince of Death. Magic has seemingly disappeared from the world and has left behind plagues on the different kingdoms. When a campaign is begun to attempt to bring magic back, Zafira and Nasir are brought together in ways they wouldn't have expected.
To be fair to this book, I listened to it because my library is running low on audiobooks that I'm interested and this was worth quite a few points for Realmathon. I have been wary of YA fantasy lately, and this has joined a long string of them that will leave my mind shortly after reading and be added to my DNF series pile. What did I think was good about this book? I thought the descriptions were very atmospheric. The setting was very well defined. There's also people who are working to further feminism/women's rights. Zafira is an alright main character, but very standard for YA fare. What did I not like? I really didn't like Nasir at all. It was hard to take him seriously on one hand, and on the other, he's a murderer for the state. I didn't see any reason Zafira should be attracted to him! Why did I think the evil immortal forest spirit guy was hotter??? The plot was slow and predictable with very few large events. I didn't feel myself drawn to picking up this audiobook when I put it down.
Overall, I don't think I'll remember much from this book as time passes. But hey, I got my team points. Go Enya!
