Under the Skin by Michel Faber

Loved it, was left wanting more.

The ending is trite I feel – an easy way out IMHO. Apart from that, I loved how a sci-fi could be non-stereotypical, mundane, very empathetic and so... human. So full of emotions. Very poignant. Finally something non-dystopian. You can't help but empathise with the heroine, yet I was left wanting more. Sure, overexplaining is not good either, yet I feel as if the author was afraid to reveal some why's about her to let us explore her motivations and emotions more. How come she can live this way daily? What does she miss? What does she desire?

Her motivations were partly revealed, but it was very late in the book, there was a very little space left to understand how she perceived the world, how she felt and how would she imagine living. She is still covered in a haze of mystery. Too much in my opinion.

Roughly midway through, the book opened a huge opportunity but did not explore it. The whole perception-thing that explains what she does. I can't say what kind of an opportunity it was without spoiling it for you. Yet it was something profound and very intriguing, but it was left unexplored. Unexplained.

Loved it anyway, a very refreshing read.
