The Lottery Ticket by Anton Chekhov
3.0

What a thing greed is.

This short story is about a woman who buys a lottery ticket. She informs her husband she has done so, and asks him to check the numbers in the paper. At first he is displeased with the frivolous spending of their limited funds telling her as much; but concedes and humors her by looking up the numbers.

To the astonishment of both husband and wife the first set of numbers printed in the paper match the lottery ticket.

Without reading on to further numbers they both begin to imagine how the wealth they’d acquire would change their lives. Each imagines a future much more luxurious than the life they currently have. Slowly, they both begin to doubt one another; and envision ways to rid the other in order to be the sole heritor of the prize money.

This is a well written story that portrays how easily greed and money (or the thought of money) can corrupt any relationship.
