To Bleed a Crystal Bloom
by Sarah A. Parker
Okay. Did I like this book? Kinda yes. Did I understand what was going on half the time? No. I had no idea what was going on until there were some serious plot developments.
I like Orlaith, she's fun and creative and kind and interesting. During this book she's reaching maturity and discovering who she is all while lusting after Rhordyn who I'm not a fan of. I'm also not a fan of the time where she was in heat. It was weird and I have no idea what to take from that. She's one of those self-sacrificing types who never gets the whole story of what she's sacrificing herself for which is mega annoying but it's probably just there to drag the reader along.
Rhordyn...talk about red flags in an unsettling way. The "connection" and the fact that Orlaith can't escape him or whatever is icky. The fact that she's his ward is icky. The way he treats her (I get it's warranted because he wants her to stay away). I just don't like it. He has less than a personality right now and I hope that changes in the next book which I'll definitely be reading because I have questions. But man....how many secrets does one guy need? Why can't he have a tiny bit of personality?!?! Ugh. Seems lame af to me.
I like Baze, LOVE Kai (and need wayyyyyy more with him in it), I'm intrigued by Shay, andddddd. I'm sus of Cainon but I still like him? Like why do I get Nikolai Lanstov type vibes from him so far? I know he has his own agenda, and it could be good or bad. Idk what to think about him yet but he's intriguing.
My biggest annoyance was the over the top prose of this book. Every little thing had to have more than one descriptive word thrown in, there were repeated and repeated inner monologues, and sometimes it just sounded dumb. I get that she's trying to paint some vivid picture, but regular words can suffice sometimes.
All in all.....two stars because the first 1/3 of the book was unnecessary, the 2/3 of the book was enjoyable, and the 3/3 of the book was downright aggravating in a way that made little sense.
