The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

2.0

I gave this book 2 stars because it's one of those everyone was raving about, and although I didn't like it, as usual, I figured, "Well maybe it's me.." but no "IT'S NOT ME ITS YOU!" I have read worse, so I'll leave 2 stars, but it should be 1.5? Couple of problems. First. I have read countless historical fiction books set during WWII. And, can I say this...maybe we can find other settings for historical fiction? I never want to diminish the tragedy that was WWII, but tragedies continue, and perhaps there are other wars/regions/time periods to center. Second. The almost titillating near affair between Vianne and Beck. Problematic. I have a hard time romanticizing that dynamic. And I agree with the another one star reviewer..the ending really sucked. The only time my interest peaked in this one was when V started rescuing the children, but that was not well developed, sadly.
If you are considering this book, don't fall for the beautiful cover or the NYT bestseller accolades. Read All the Light You Cannot See instead. Or Half a Yellow Sun if you want a story set in another war that's truly brilliant.
