Different Seasons
by Stephen King
An excellent collection of novellas that keeps the pages turning.
This might go without saying (as the films based on these stories are such classics), but Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption and The Body are masterpieces of short America literature. If nothing else, these are absolute must-reads and rank among the best works I've read by King.
With those tied for my favorite, I would rank The Breathing Method second by a somewhat wide margin. It's captivating, heart-wrenching, and chilling to the bone - but far from a classic and a bit basic all told.
Then Apt Pupil comes in last, but still well worth a read. The dialogue is excellent - as it is in all of these novellas - and the ending left me shocked and appalled. But both of the lead characters are abhorrent, and while normally this doesn't bother me it did make some of the drier stretches of the story feel more painful and drawn out. There were also some shock factors to this story that I feel were unjustified and over the top - but hey, that's just me!
Overall, another excellent book for the collection - even if the flame flickers from time to time.
