Anne of the Island by L.M. Montgomery
4.0

Like [b:Anne of Avonlea|859118|Anne of Avonlea (Anne of Green Gables, #2)|L.M. Montgomery|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1320499706s/859118.jpg|63845], this book was initially a bit difficult to get into since Anne has become much more sensible and levelheaded in her transition from girl to woman, plus there is the change in setting away from magical Avonlea to contend with. However, once Anne settles into her college life at Redmond, the story feels akin to comfort food. I greatly enjoyed reading about Anne and Gilbert's blossoming romance, which is fraught with obstacles but has a lovely payoff in the final chapter. Anne's new friend Phil is a welcome addition to the sprawling cast of characters; her outspoken personality is always dialed up to eleven, yet she serves as the welcome voice of reason several times. Montgomery has a tendency to dwell on meaningless incidentals and Davy's existence continues to irritate me, but the good far outweighs the bad to make this book worth reading.
