All the love for this book & series! The dynamic husband & wife detectives are back & better than ever. Freddie & Grace embark on another mystery adventure this time taking them to America & Scotland! An inherited Scottish castle, murder, lots of twists & turns, & even a ghost make this fun historical mystery unputdownable!
Freddie & Grace travel to America to visit her father, but when they arrive, they find her family home sold & her father gone. Grace’s father’s landed in financial trouble which puts Grace’s inheritance in jeopardy. His solicitor offers hope when he delivers a last letter from her mother informing her of a Scottish castle inheritance for both her & her sister. The only catch, they must both arrive in Scotland within 3 months after the last laird’s death to inherit.
When Grace & Freddie find her sister’s home, they arrive in time to find her holding a knife over her dead husband. Grace doesn’t believe her sister is guilty, but their tumultuous relationship says otherwise. With the clock ticking, Grace & Freddie must prove her prickly sister innocent & find the real killer so they can make it to Scotland in time.
This book was so much fun! The mystery was complex with plenty of twists. There were several suspects with motivations & I loved the unexpected surprise in the middle. Not only is there a mystery in America, but when they arrive in Scotland, there’s a hiccup with the inheritance & a castle with puzzles of its own, including a supposed ghost. I loved Mr. Locke, the delightful caretaker of the castle & seeing Zahra play a role in the story.
Pepper Basham always has a lot of heart in her books. I enjoyed seeing Grace & Lillian become closer as sisters & find reconciliation. Also loved the messages of forgiveness & healing, with a gentle faith thread woven in. Freddie’s & Grace’s marriage continues to grow even stronger & I can’t wait for their next adventure!
Highly recommend! Though part of a series, it can be read as a standalone, but is more enjoyable if you’ve read the previous books in the series. I received an advanced copy from the publisher with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are completely my own & provided voluntarily.
