Varina by Charles Frazier

3.0

Recommended by a co-worker. This is a beautifully written book and the language and feel of the South emanate off of the page (or out of my car speakers). This isn't an aspect of the Civil War I was particularly familiar with and Frazier seems to have done a decent job of bringing the story to life.

Summary: Her marriage prospects limited, teenage Varina Howell agrees to wed the much-older widower Jefferson Davis, with whom she expects the secure life of a Mississippi landowner. Davis instead pursues a career in politics and is eventually appointed president of the Confederacy, placing Varina at the white-hot center of one of the darkest moments in American history.
