happenstance 's review for:
Friday
by Robert A. Heinlein
I feel cheated, having wasted my time to read this.
For a book that sets out to tell a story of high-minded ideals, it - just doesn't. It's filled with casual racism, as well as absolutely abhorrent attitudes towards women and rape, and after all that, the story is meandering and painful.
Even when I take the time to consider the book within cultural and historical context, at the end of the day it's still just a bad story being used as a vehicle to push a free love agenda. Which, fine, whatever - if that's the story you want to write, then write that. Don't tack on some weak plot that is basically ignored in favour of pages and pages of random sex encounters.
