This is a complicated book. At its heart it’s the tale of sisterly love, of bonds that are forged by proximity in childhood that press through to adulthood. I was especially struck by the growth the characters had to go through in order to become a three after being a four. That heart-felt transition was apparent throughout.

Without that sisterly connection, this is a book about broken people. Addiction, death and self-destruction appear in facets of all three sisters’ lives. Childhood trauma crowds out their adult selves and they continue to seek for what they did not receive then they needed it most in their formative years.

This was a hard read. There’s a lot of content I found especially difficult around sex, drugs and alcohol and infertility. But it is a novel that brings the human condition of being female to the surface and for that reason I’m glad I read it.
