The Tangleroot Palace
by Marjorie M. Liu
I got an ARC of this book.
Each of the stories were so different, the only real similarity was they were all pretty. Liu is a gorgeous writer. Every word is beautiful and it shines. The issue for me is I have always preferred a good plot over fancy writing. I need to be able to read and have the plot happen without having to wade through overly flowery language. So this was hit or miss for me.
Some stories were AMAZING. The first one, the one about the dolls, was so incredibly creepy and wonderful. I would have loved to live in that world forever. Then the Brier Rose retelling was pretty, but it was so slow for me. The stories just kept jumping around from overly pretty to ok to amazing. I ended up not finishing most of the stories, because I would find myself bored and not reading for days at a time to avoid a story I wasn't really into.
So overall, I would only recommend this to people that really value writing style. It is pretty and it will have big fans. I am just eh about it though.
