Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl

5.0

I read this as a child several decades ago and chose it as a quick re-read, and am so glad I did that. The story and characters are fun and intriguing, the illustrations are great, and I'd forgotten about the Oompa-Loompas! From the perspective of an adult, there is a lot of wit and wisdom (some a bit dated but still thought provoking) I probably missed or didn't like the first time around. When I rated this from memory upon shelving it to GoodReads I gave it a 4. It's a 5 now, and I'm off to find the several other books Dahl wrote that relate to this one which will all be new to me.

‘ Just imagine , ’ cried Mr Wonka , ‘ when I start using this across the country … you’ll be sitting at home watching television and suddenly a commercial will flash on to the screen and a voice will say , “ EAT WONKA’S CHOCOLATES ! THEY’RE THE BEST IN THE WORLD ! IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE US , TRY ONE FOR YOURSELF – NOW ! ” And you simply reach out and take one ! How about that , eh ? ’ ‘ Terrific ! ’ cried Grandpa Joe . ‘ It will change the world ! ’
