Othello by William Shakespeare

5.0

Coming into Othello, I probably had the greatest "reputation to knowledge" discrepancy to date - I knew it's much beloved, and that it has to do with Iago slowly turning Othello's mind, and that was about it. Luckily its reputation holds out marvelously. This drama of revenge, power, deception, and (of course) a battle of the sexes seems lasting and poignant beyond most of Shakespeare's already excellent works. Moreso than elsewhere, the direct confrontation with race especially, but class, gender and other social dimensions typical to the bard marks the work as timeless.

I was honestly concerned for its reputation given Othello as a black male lead, and with how badly these plays can falter into slurs and stereotypes, but not, there's great nuance here, across a whole slew of great, memorable characters, fantastic scenes... yeah, this one is as good as it's reputed to be, and one for the ages. Read it, experience it!
