Once every ten years, ten of the semidioses, children of the gods, of Reino del Sol are chosen to take part in the Sunbearer Trials, a brutal competition to decide who will win, and bring another ten years protection to the cities of Reino del Sol, and who will lose, and be sacrificed to provide that protection.

Sol, the creator god, chooses the competitors, normally from the Golds, the strongest and most powerful semidioses, but this time, has chosen eight Golds and two Jades, Teo the trans son of the goddess Quetzal, and Xio, the young child of the god of bad luck, to compete. As Teo tries to survive the competition, and ensure his friends do too, he deals with the pressure of being a semidios, and the risk of being a sacrifice at the end of all of his hard work.

A thrilling, fun, and beautifully built world of magic awaits the reader in The Sunbearer Trials. A vibrant and complex world, fleshed out and real, with characters that never once felt one-dimensional. I really, really thoroughly enjoyed this, and no spoilers, but I cannot wait to read more in this world.
