I loved the concept of this book but I hated the execution. The first thing that immediately turned me off was the fact that it’s a fantasy book with no map. The second thing that turned me off was the fact that it’s a standalone fantasy novel. Not that standalone fantasy novels are inherently bad, but they immediately turn me off at first bc most of the time they feel very one dimensional and I’m unable to get a full grasp of the world and the characters in the limited amount of time we’re given. And, unfortunately, that fact runs true for this book.

I love the idea of soulmates and fated mates, but I think the romance in this book relies very heavily on that trope. I’m struggling to see any reason why the characters care about each other besides the fact that they’re supposed to be together because of fate or destiny. And the characters themselves felt very one dimensional. Like their only purpose in this world was that they’re soulmates.

That being said, I did like the past lives aspect and finally being able to piece together the ancient story with how it connected to the present storyline. I would have loved to see more of that though since it was the most interesting part of the book for me.
