To Kill a Shadow by Katherine Quinn
2.0

To Kill a Shadow is set in a kingdom that has not seen the sun in decades after the sun goddess's disappearance. Our dual narrators, Ki and Jude, are members of the king's army and are picked to venture into the dark mist to attempt to find a way to return light to the people.

The book wasn't a bad read, but it falls flat to so many other books I've read in the same genre.

The world-building feels rushed, but I'm hoping things feel better in the sequel because this book does have a lot of potential. I mean, a kingdom in permanent darkness, monsters, gods and goddesses all should be really interesting if it can be properly fleshed out! But... there are so many things that either just get explained through exposition or just kind of get rushed through. I was able to predict the entire plot of the book very early on. This book is heavily laden with stereotypes of the genre, so... it wasn't really hard to see where things were going.

I just didn't love the characters or their relationships to one another. Both narrators fall heavy into stereotypes (pretty girl who can fight and cute broody boy), and I felt bored with their romance. Even the friendships with other characters feels forced and surface-level.

However, I do really like the concept of this book, and I think there is potential. I plan on giving the sequel a chance when it releases!
