Now, Review time...
This was a 3-3.5 ⭐ read for a majority of the book. I like the story, but there were some elements that just kept it from being a Great read. However, once we hit 75%-80%, it really picked up and bumped this to a 4 ⭐ for me.

The beginning started off strong. It gripped me. I was intrigued. But shortly thereafter, I found myself confused and a little lost. I struggled with the world-building, finding it difficult to picture the setting and conceptualize a time period. It felt like I was being led to an otherworldly setting, not of modern times. However, certain descriptions, phrases, and activities lead to the contrary. It never really ironed out so I just muddled the two and accepted it as it was. No biggie.

The middle felt dense and, at times, disorienting, but not majorly negative. Still getting accustomed to a new author and her writing style. We're giving grace. Plus, of course, there's a lot of info and plot building that can't be skimmed. So trust the process and take your time reading here. There are mysteries to behold. Plus some pretty great banter. *and spice

Now, the ending chunk. *dun dun dunnnnnnn 🫣
Here's where it really got me. Sucked me in and didn't let go until the end. The unraveling, if you will.
While much unfolds and secrets are revealed (both answers and more unanswered secrets), that first bomb drop, while suspected, was quite anticlimactic. No build up to it, just....there it is and let's move on. But, that's ok. Doesn't ruin the story or the experience because there's more action and revelation that quickly ensue, and you become engaged and addicted to every last word now. You viscerally need answers.
Then, you're hit with one helluva twist and then knocked in the head with a cliffhanger.

Overall, I enjoyed the time spent reading. I will definitely be reading book two (Please hurry, Jaime) and I would recommend this book to my Dark Fantasy girlies.

*Pros:
-Headstrong, mouthy, stubborn, strong-willed, loyal, broken FMC
-Dark, broody, mysterious, Alpha MMC
-Banter
-Spice
-Memorable side characters
-Ending twist with a cliffhanger

*Cons:
-Confusing
-Muddled world-building
-Perplexing magic and realm history
-Dense writing
