The Known World by Edward P. Jones
4.0

4.5 stars really. The New York Times recently released a poll of writers and critics that named the best books so far of the 21st century and this book came in at 4th place, which made it the best American novel in the list. (Interestingly, the book didn't make the list compiled by the readers at all.) I'm usually a little skeptical about lists like this but I thought I would give this book a chance anyway. And I'm glad I did -- it's pretty near perfect. The characters are all interesting and the subject matter (black slave owners) was completely new to me. I enjoyed Jones' writing style, the constant jumping in time and among characters, but it took me a while to get used to it. But I can see why many people wouldn't like it. People who like stories straightforwardly told are going to be confused and disappointed by this book. But people who like adventurous prose should not be disappointed.
