Nightwoods
by Charles Frazier
dark
mysterious
reflective
tense
Charles Frazier's previous works (Cold Mountain and Thirteen Moons) are five star novels for me (Cold Mountain being one of my all-time favorites), but I'd decided to skip this one due to its subject matter. Crime noir and thrillers are not genres I gravitate toward. Thank the serendipitous god of Little Free Libraries, then (I could not resist this pristine hardback edition from one of my favorite authors). I loved everything about this. Every character so precisely rendered, the landscape so tenderly articulated it feels like you're stepping through the page and into the woods. It's ominous and at times hard to read, but I should have known I could trust Charles Frazier to write so respectfully, delicately, swiftly, and with very real unsentimentality.
