Tess of the Road by Rachel Hartman
5.0

The blurb I read for this called it "fantasy for the #metoo movement." This really irked me. It struck me as using a buzzy trendy word to get people to pay attention to a book that doesn't need additional buzz or trendiness.

This is a phenomenal book, and it stands on its own two feet.

Yes, there are issues that the #MeToo movement is addressing, but you know what? Those aren't a just-now trend thing. This is a book that holistically addresses a whole range of issues and situations, in a profoundly real and true manner. The way it is written rings more true, for me, than decades of similar girl-on-the-road books have before. It doesn't elide the less-photogenic stuff.

It is also a fantastically well-written book with adventure, wonderful characters, lots of imagination, and even some humor. It is uplifting and fun to read and in short, to me, very nearly a perfect book.
