Dark Matter by Blake Crouch

2.0

Dark Matter was one of the most, if not the most recommended book for me. However, it did not cut it for me. The novel explores quantum mechanics and alternate realities with an exciting premise but a long, drawn, and bland plot.

The novel starts strong with a relatively bearable first half but gets repetitive and drawn out with every page turn. The sci-fi concepts Crouch employs are explained well without any instructional undertones. However, that is the only good thing I can associate with this book, the rest of everything, from the characters to the writing was sub-par for me. The characters are undeveloped, sure, they have attributes and jobs but there is little to no depth to them or the decisions they make.

The only emotion that our protagonist can feel is pure, unadulterated jealousy at the thought of her wife with another version of him. Not her security, or the security of his son but the gnawing feeling that another version of him might be better at sex than him. Charlie (the son) is written as an afterthought. There is little to mention of him when the protagonist longs to return home to his reality.
It is really hard to point out other icky stuff in the novel without giving the plot away so I will stop here.
