My sister was the one who first introduced me to Brandi Carlile. It was my 30th birthday and we were at a dueling piano bar on karaoke night, and my brave, incredible sister got up and belted out The Story. I was instantly hooked.
Brandi has lived a fascinating life, and the memoir is full of compelling stories. That said, I often found myself wanting more depth. Some of the biggest moments didn’t quite land with the emotional weight I was hoping for. If I had read the physical book, it probably would’ve been a 3-star read for me.
But the audiobook? That’s what bumped it up to 4 stars for me. Brandi’s voice, both speaking and singing, is just beautiful. She narrates the book, and throughout the chapters she end each one with a song or two. There’s even a bonus chapter at the end with about an hour and a half of her music. It really added something special.
All that to say: Brandi Carlile is an icon. She’ll go down in history as one of the greats. I’ll always be a fan, and I can’t wait to see what she does next.
