rachelfriars 's review for:
Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac
by Gabrielle Zevin
Books like these do not make me happy.
Now, I know what you're thinking: "But Rachel, everything ends up happy and full of possibility in the end! How is that not great?!"
Well let me tell you.
I have trouble with these books filled with people who are genuinely not great people. If my mother cheated on my father, got pregnant and decided to abandon her whole family for a new one? I'd not be inclined to speak to her. I generally just take issue with the whole concept of familial upheaval and drama and terrible people.
And it isn't even that, but the fact that all these conflicts are presented in the beginning of the book means that the main character will be relatively over it by the end of the book--which I cannot sympathize or deal with.
Anyway, its hard to explain, but sometimes I just wish that the shit things people did in the beginning of books ended up still being shitty at the end. I loved this, I really did. It was funny and creative and so cute, but I knocked a star because honestly I HATE the predictability of all the conflicts. I don't feel happy upon finishing this book, I feel residual anger on behalf of Naomi, our main character.
