Being Lolita by Alisson Wood

4.0

I’d give this 3.75. This is a very well-written memoir, I enjoyed the style a lot and found that it flowed easily, I finished in 2 nights.

I don’t really like to comment on the “story” when it’s someone’s real experience, but I didn’t enjoy this as much as My Dark Vanessa (also hate to compare, but there it is). With that said, I did think this book was unique, particularly in the 2nd half as it kind of blends the ideas of not just a taboo relationship but also a mentally and emotionally abusive one outside of that. I felt like it really took a turn almost into a totally different story, which I didn’t expect.

I was ready for it to finish by the end, and there were a few points that seemed like might have been a better ending point in my opinion, but again, as this is a memoir, I get adding the additional pieces- it’s real life, it’s not meant to be as poetic as a novel.
