Surviving Home by Katerina Canyon

challenging emotional reflective fast-paced

4.0

I love poetry as a form to feel the emotion of an experience, to see it in a different light. Through the perspective of a black woman in LA, dealing with challenges of racism, abuse, and the like, Katerina Canyon tells us her story. She highlights home as somewhere she endured, not the "safety of home" so many (myself included) often take for granted. This collection isn't about making you feel good - it's about reality. It doesn't tell you how to react - it just is, unapologetically. There are simply observations, feelings, and questions about growing up, and about racism today. This collection is heavy, but I loved reading it.
