Resurrection Reprise
by Hailey Turner
This was my favorite Hailey Turner book to date.
The Soulbound series is epic, and should be read first if you want a good understanding of everything that happens in this story. Spencer was an important part of the resolution of the Soulbound series, and this book tells his story after the dust has settled from the fight to save the world.
Spencer's story felt a little more personal. He is a bit of an outcast in society because of his magic. His slightly resigned but also practical approach to his existence is a reality many people live with. We don't get to choose what we are born with or how society will view us, but we can choose how we handle ourselves in the face of adversity. Spencer reconnects with the vampire Takoma while he is working a new case, and their different approaches to life create an interesting dynamic. Spencer's pragmatic approach to life is a nice counterbalance to Takoma's defiance of all authority.
The plot is an excellent continuation of the previous series. Readers get a glimpse of characters from the previous series, but the new cast is just as interesting and varied. The dynamic between Spencer and Takoma made for an engaging read. The setting was portrayed beautiful. I live in the area that Spencer ventures into, and I think Hailey Turner did a wonderful job of capturing the feel of the city and the surrounding wilderness. If they had just ventured down to the comic book store at The Market. I totally would have given Fatima some treats.
As always Gary Furlongs performance is spectacular, and makes the reading/listening experience even more engaging.
