Dear Martin by Nic Stone

5.0

I've had this book on my shelf for waaay too long and, now that I've read it, I really regret putting it off for so long! Dear Martin was an emotionally charged, powerful and meaningful read that kept me gripped from page 1 all the way through to the end!

After a white police officer puts Justyce in handcuffs, he starts writing letters to Dr Martin Luther King Jr. as a way to process what's happened to him. Just as life starts to get back to normal, an off duty cop pulls up next to Justyce and his friend while they're out on a drive. Shots are fired and Justyce's world is turned upside down all over again.

I absolutely loved this book! It was definitely a tough read, as it didn't shy away from the sad realities of life as a Black man in America right now, but Justyce was such a great protagonist that I couldn't put it down, even as I was reading through my tears. I really enjoyed seeing Justyce's growth throughout the book, and I'm really impressed that the author managed to fit in such a great character arc in a relatively short book. Justyce grapples with a lot of struggles and questions that I think a lot of young people will be able to relate to, particularly poc.

If you're looking for a quick read that encapsulates a lot of the racial justice issues that are ongoing in the world at the moment, Dear Martin is definitely one to pick up. I'll definitely be picking up more of Nic Stone's works in the near future!
