This was such a good sequel! Malik was my favorite character in “The Henna Artist” so I was so happy there was a book devoted to him that didn’t detract from the central focus of women in this story! While Malik’s business in Jaipur is the lynchpin of the story, there is a strong influence of the women around him in this novel. I was impressed by how Joshi wove together two complex conflicts and presented them with clarity at the end of the novel.
Like its predecessor, this novel does a good job of preserving Indian culture for the time period, especially when talking about Indian tribal cultures along the Indo-Nepal border. It was also interesting to see how Joshi fleshed the these characters out and demonstrated how some characters changed for the better or the worse as time went on. I felt like this was a great follow up to the series but it was well written enough that you could read it as a stand alone!
