I don’t quite know how to rate this book. Its themes and characters resonated with me in profound ways, but the novel is not without its flaws.
Fredrick Backman is a master of making me emotional. When I first started this novel I was uncertain of if I would resonate with the themes. I’ve never given much thought or resonated much with the profound value of art, but by the end of the novel I was in tears thinking about it.
I’ve always been someone who loves to write but I’ve always thought that I would never be able to make a career of it. So I’ve been looking to go into more lucrative fields. I don’t know if it’s too dramatic to say that this book may have changed my outlook on my future and the art I have the potential to create but I truly think it might have.
There were times when Backman’s writing felt a little too manipulative or a little too intent on giving the readers a plot twist.
I know that that criticism should be enough to disqualify this book from a five star review but in the words of Backman “it’s easy to be a critic, anyone can do that. But art doesn’t need critics, art has enough enemies already. Art needs friends.”
