When you are buying books without looking them up beforehand, it's like a russian roulette. You never know what to expect. This book was just like a bullet: surprising and caught me off guard.
I enjoyed Josie's personality so much. She was more of a young adult in her twenties than a teenager. But that didn't bother me at all. It was nice reading about her, the first person narrative was very on point here, because I felt like I'm in Josie's mind. When Josie was sad or angry, I felt it with such an intensity, like those feelings were mine. The other characters however, were a bit bland and faded. I especially didn't like Kate and Geoff.
Kate is an egoist. I couldn't get away with how she treated Josie. She was immature, hurt Josie's self-esteem, and at 15/16 this is no joke. I was sort of bullied at that age too, by someone I love, and I can tell you, it left a huge impact on me. Geoff was... well Geoff. And I hate Geoff. Sorry not sorry. He is awful and just because he's intelligent and curious, like Josie, doesn't mean they are very alike. The last few pages felt like a forced happy ending to a story that wasn't ready for it(at least concerning Kate and Geoff).
The other characters were likeable, although I would've loved a little more of Mrs. Easterday.
All-in-all, it was a good book to start the year with. Would recommend.
