Stardust by Neil Gaiman
4.0

This is written very differently from the way the movie portrays the story; to be honest, they are almost two completely different stories. However, each stands with its own merit, and Neil was involved in both of them (I believe), and so I was able to enjoy both.

Keep in mind that this is more of a children's book, although, with all of Neil's children's literature, there is a darker side to it. He doesn't talk to down to children, which I think is a huge plus with them; he knows that they can decide what they can and cannot handle, and I respect him all the more for that. Stardust reads like a cross between a child's early chapter book and a sophisticated folk or fairy tale. I would recommend that people read this before seeing the movie, just so they can appreciate the two more. I find that this is the best way to enjoy each medium.
