Spinning Silver
by Naomi Novik
8 have now read uprooted, spinning, silver, and the scholomance series, and I feel comfortable giving my feedback about her writing in general. This book showcases a little stumbling block that she had in her early writing: balance. The story is so creative and rich, executed artfully, the action is very interesting, the villain is really good, and the characters are generally complex and compelling. The problem is that she doesn’t give herself enough time, enough, pages, or even enough books to fully explore each relationship and each world. After reading the scholomance series it is so nice to be able to spend some significant time in one of her fabulous worlds. I am amazed at her ability to create again and again
Such creative and complex stories. In uprooted and in spinning Silver, the books were imbalanced because she only really gave her self space for story, character development and world building, which is impressive to pull off and one novel as it is. But I’m this book, the ending felt rushed. Two characters are supposed to have fallen in love between the final battle and the end of the book but we sort of skip over that part, and there isn’t really any romance which I feel cheated by. The end result is that I think it’s nice that they fell in love, but I don’t really have any strong feelings about it. It feels as if seeds were down that were not grown.
It’s been wonderful to see her grow as a writer and I’d love to see more from her because her ideas are so so good if you tend to like her work, but I feel that this one could have been truly excellent and the ending was abbreviated. That being said, I still love her work.
I very much encourage you to read her scholomance series because I think it’s the best thing she has done.
