Year One by Nora Roberts
4.0

Let's start by saying I am a huge fan of Nora Roberts' newer books. I know a lot of readers aren't loving the direction she's been going in lately, but I think its great. This book barely felt like a Nora Roberts' book--I would NOT classify it as a romance. Sure, there were some romantic couples, but that doesn't count as romance. So it's a new direction & it's not romance---and I still really liked it.

The premise is interesting because most dystopian books are based post-event & we are in that new world from the start. This book walks us right through what happened in real time so everything feels immediate and urgent. I thought this was great.

I don't feel like this story had a main character, per se, for a lot of the book. It flashed between different groups until they eventually met up which was an interesting way to introduce us to the important players of this series. Lana was definitely a focal point, but I feel like was more tuned towards the end of the book.

I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I really wasn't a fan of the ending. I see a lot of other readers weren't loving the switch from Max to Simon & I agree. I like my main "love interest" to include two people, period. This wasn't a love triangle, but without giving anything away, I wasn't a fan. I LIKE Simon....I just felt like the end section from Fourth of July onwards felt like an abrupt switch from everything else in the book. It almost felt like a different book entirely. It was a five star book for me up until that abrupt switch. We shall see what the next book does to ease that ending for me.

I've never started a Nora Roberts' book before the rest of that series was already published--not on purpose, it's just always worked out that way. I am itching for book #2 to see what happens next!
