How Far You Have Come: Musings on Beauty and Courage by Morgan Harper Nichols

adventurous inspiring fast-paced

5.0

I feel that MHN is amazing and unique in what she does. I loved her book All Along You Were Blooming and I was glad Jen Hatmaker chose this one for her May bookclub. It is a breath of fresh air for a busy month.

In this book, she has chapters of different states. The first one is Georgia, and it begins a journey of her family moving from Georgia to California. California is the last chapter. Within the book, there are chapters for Louisiana, where she volunteered after Hurricane Katrina and states like Texas and New Mexico, where she began writing poetry and making art, and how these places changed her. I enjoyed hearing about these significant moments in her life.

At the beginning and end of each chapter, she features her signature art with poetry that help tell about the state and the feelings she had there.

“What a gift it was to be inconvenienced. When we are, we always have the choice to look, listen, and delight in the beauty that is before us.” Georgia

“I was incapable of finding a melody. So instead of a song, I let the words rain down in poetry.
     When you start to feel
like things should have been better this year
       remember the mountains and valleys
       that brought you here.”
Texas

“I write to connect, because I know in my core, we are all more alike than we are different. I write in honesty and imperfection, knowing things will get better, and together, we have a gift of grace. So no matter the stage of life—whether in open plains, valleys, or mountains—I believe we have a duty to connect, a duty to share, a duty to create in our calling, whatever that may be.” Texas
