R.F. Kuang is a great writer and has amazing world-building skills. I started reading this series because it was recommended to me by several people.

This series talkes about genocide, resistance to colonialism, racism, war of religions, and is overall just very dark and depressing. I saw many parallels to the real world though and it made me think of the current situation in Israel/Palestine and the history of Western colonization. I also like the way R.F. Kuang weaves the topic of spirituality into her series.

By the end I found it hard to continue reading because the plot didn't really catch me anymore. Overall this book (and also the second book of this series) talks a lot about war strategies and there are extremely violent scenes - be prepared for mentions of cannibalism for example. The first book is called "The Poppy War" so I guess that I should've expected that though...
