Ah ha! This book cracked me up. Talk about sappy! It took a mere couple of hours to read. I still haven't figured out what year it was supposed to be set in. (I'm assuming the year it was published, but I don't recall 1989 being quite like that.) It was so predictable in its predictability, that the ending was shocking.
