Hard Times
by Charles Dickens, Jeff Nunokawa, Gage McWeeny
Read a melodrama made in the past 20 or so years and you’re a Philistine. Read a melodrama over 100 years old and you have classic taste.
Bwa ha ha. Go me. :D
Seriously, though, I did enjoy this. It was delightful to see Mr. Bounderby get his comeuppance. Took long enough! I genuinely liked Old Stephan, though, and was annoyed Dickens didn’t let him have his happily-ever-after, but then, as a friend of mine said recently, “The worst thing in a book is to have a character die and no one cares.” So… yeah I cared. Dang it.
