El idiota by Fyodor Dostoevsky
3.0
In the middle of the 19th century, society in Europe was not too different from what we have now: gossiping about each other, keeping an eye on every step one performs so we feel entitled and opinionated about unknown individuals... Meanwhile, our dear Prince waits to be misunderstood as an idiotic, stupid man only for having the grace to see and say the good, the beautiful and the positive in everything. Maybe they were right... how could such treats not be considered useless when we know how society behaves?
The first Russian classic I read was Tolstoy's Hadzhi-Murat, and he's style +or the translator's style+ did't catch me. With that first impression, I went to the bookstore and bought El Idiota by another canonical author. Dostoyevski appeared in my life thanks to the book club I was part of at the end of 2020, and it was good a decision to read it.
I loved the unfiltered main character: portraying children's pureness in the skin of a man, showing others how simple and beautiful life is. There were many interesting topics that El Idiota covered and the one that got me stuck with for hours was the ephimeral concept of time. I never felt more productive in all 2020 as when I started those first chapters from the novel.
*At the end of the story, one can argue whether El Idiota was really an idiot or not... All I know is that I would have liked a different ending to such a wise man.
My psych buds will love it¡¡¡ The psychological analogies in every situation will keep you hooked. BUT, until you get to that point, many many pages will you have to go through... Each meeting, gathering, party, conversation or thought will take pages and chapters to unfold the real nature of the situation, and maybe that will not be appealing to some.
