Another Bullshit Night in Suck City: A Memoir by Nick Flynn
5.0
I believe the title and spine of this leapt out at me from a friend’s bookshelf. Both harrowing and inspiring. Flynn is a published poet and this is evident in the prose. Some passages even reminded me of Charles Wright, in their cadence and tone. I can’t recommend this book enough. It’s a testament to the power of meaningful art to rise from fertile soil and steaming shit alike. Nothing about the territory here is familiar for me–the criminality, the broken homes, the marginality, the substance abuse and apparent mental illness–and yet their emotional shadows are articulated clearly and memorably. Absolutely recommend this to everyone. It basically reads itself, so arresting are the stories, and so relentless the prose.
