The Vacation by John Marrs
5.0

📖 This one hits the ground running. It had me from the start. John Marrs is the master of character development. He not only gives every individual character well rounded personalities but they all have heart, quirks and a whole lot of intrigue. In this book it seems everyone at the Venice Beach international hostel has a secret, or a tragic past or something they are running from. I loved each one individually for different reasons. But most intriguing and my favourite has to be Ruth. I used to make scrap books of boy bands I loved as a teen so that little detail made me smile. I also enjoy knitting but not quite as she does. And the enigma Dutch handy man Peyk who seems to know exactly what each person is going through and is always nearby to give out some cryptic but deep advice.

It is expertly read by Peter Noble the range of accents he does are impeccable. Irish, English, American and Australian and more. He gives each character their own personality and tone of voice and I very much enjoyed it all the more because of this.

The story lines criss cross throughout as the people within the hostel interact and it builds and builds to a finale that had me holding my breath. There are some truly shocking bits too that left me feeling like did that actually just happen?!!!. Marrs is a master of the thriller craft and this book does not disappoint. The last few hours of it honestly felt like I'd been 10 rounds in a boxing ring. The hits and twists  just keep on coming at you. Revelation after revelation, twisty turns like you won't guess are coming. It's no holiday or travel plan I'd ever want to get involved in. However idyllic the backdrop of Venice Beach maybe. That Hostel is nothing but trouble for most its inhabitants. Spectacular storytelling.

It gets a super sunny 5 Lucy Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
