I wish I had a better grasp of the historical figures that Rilke writes about—he does the reader no favors by providing sufficient context. Yet there are so many passages of thrilling beauty however, and so many haunting—even Gothic—images that the novel remains captivating even so.

Also, I am fascinated by how much Sartre's Nausea, which I read earlier this year, seems to borrow from/retrace the path of this book.
