The Shining by Stephen King

The Shining undoubtedly deserves its popularity, the tone and atmosphere had me on the edge of my seat, my heart rate even speeding up a little.

The plot follows Jack Torrance, a recovering alcoholic, taking a new position as caretaker of The Overlook hotel. His wife, Wendy, and son, Danny are reluctant to go but go nonetheless. After their arrival, the plot builds up in intensity with little weird sightings to complete personality changes.
The hotel is notorious for odd occurrences, one such event was a previous caretaker killing his family and then himself.

The characters were also done really well, especially Jack, I loved the buildup in his personality and his breaking through briefly toward the end. That scene was really significant, however brief it may be.

I had to take a break from this book for over a week and read something more light-hearted.
The book creeped me out that much.
Many reviewers say King was at his best when he wrote this book, it will be a while till I pick up another of his books, I need to give myself some time in between reading horror books.

Overall, a chilling and terrifying read, necessary for horror fans everywhere.
