Doctor Sleep by Stephen King

5.0

As is often the case with Stephen King, his novels seem to beckon to me in a moment of need. I try to be cautious about sharing my personal details, and especially in book reviews, but this one came to me at a time when I was struggling with a troubling relationship to alcohol.

The opening inscription is from the Big Blue Book of AA and it hit me like a slung stone between the eyes. All throughout the book, I related to and resonated with Dan at some unseen level that's hard to explain.

If you've ever been brought low by drugs or alcohol because you're trying to numb a powerful obsession to do great things, if you've ever known you were destined to do something amazing, but the claim on your life feels too great and you flee it by using a mind-altering substance, if you've ever done something terrible that you regret when on a drug or drink, and you wrestle with feeling that act is the shame that proves you're worthless, disqualified, if you've ever felt any or all of those ways, this book is for you.
