Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer
5.0
I think it must be impossible to read this book and remain unchanged. As someone who loves food more than most things, this book has challenged and ultimately transformed my eating and cooking habits, moral code, and mentality.
The book is hard to read for so many reasons. I had to take it in chunks with long breaks for reflection and even tears in between. I'm astounded by the staggering amount of suffering that animals must endure to end up in our bellies, and by the lengths of human cruelty and apathy. We consume ungodly amounts of meat and dairy day after day without considering how it got to us in the first place. While more "pasture-raised" alternatives exist now than when this book was published, they are still hard to find and often do not live up to the standards that they claim. So I'm asking: is it worth the risk? Is eating a BLT worth the possibility that the animal suffered for it? Beyond this, is it worth the heavy toll that animal ag has on our environment and our health?
For me, no.
