The Last Command by Timothy Zahn

5.0

Loved this trilogy. It has an interesting, complex plot, introduces great new characters, and does an excellent job of portraying the old ones and showing how their lives have evolved after the battle of Endor. I really liked the fact that Luke isn't yet an all-powerful Jedi, but still learning and struggling with himself, and his worries about teaching the next generation. I also liked seeing that some of Leia's abilities have sharpened and she's making use of them, and training with Luke just so she can have another tool to protect herself and the people she loves. I loved the bits about her and Han (especially considering how they're being treated by the new canon): it's family-friendly, yet really intense and adorable. Looking around, I've noticed there was a tendency in these EU books to pair Luke with whatever main female character the book introduced. Even though I know
Spoilerthat he and Mara do end up together in following books
, I appreciated that these books, at least, don't even hint at romance between them.

What I didn't find very convincing was Thrawn's apparent omniscience. I get that he was a great strategist, but sometimes it bordered on unrealistic, considering he wasn't particularly strong in the Force, as I understood. C'baoth was also a bit too much at points, though to be honest, it was like seeing Palpatine at the end of RotS, so maybe it wasn't that weird, all things considered.
