False Step by Victoria Helen Stone

3.0

When her husband Johnny finds a missing child on a hike, Veronica's life is turned upside down. The young boy had been missing for days and Johnny and his dog happened across him in the wilderness, turning Johnny into a hero. He seems to be loving the limelight, but when it's revealed that the boy was kidnapped and his rich family paid a hefty ransom, Veronica starts to question her husband. Could he have some part in the kidnapping?

I was blown away last year by Jane Doe, as was all of Goodreads it seems, so I was highly anticipating Victoria Helen Stone's next book. I feel like, for a thriller, this book didn't keep me on my toes. I guessed some of the plot twists and the reveals didn't feel shocking enough for me. I love a good twisty turny thriller and this just wasn't it.

Now - the characters. I absolutely hated Johnny. There was several times I was thinking 'why is Veronica still married to this guy??'
SpoilerI understand that she didn't want to hurt her daughter by divorcing, but wouldn't it be better for their child to grow up with two happily divorced parents, than two parents who are constantly cheating on the other and who don't communicate?? Johnny was just such a dick and I would have divorced him immediately. Fuck that guy.

The book was an easy read and I'll definitely read more from Stone!
